Peer Support Groups
A complete guide to Anise Health’s clinician-led support groups
for the Asian community.
What are peer support groups?
Anise’s peer support groups are clinician-led small discussion circles, which research shows can increase quality of life by using community healing to reduce stress and burnout.
These recurring spaces are well-suited for individuals of Asian descent to reflect upon culturally-specific topics, such as pressure to succeed, imposter syndrome, and managing family expectations. Our Asian support groups meet for one hour a week, and they are an accessible way to experience Anise's tailored approach to mental health care.
“I live in an area where there aren’t many people who look like me. I really enjoyed the support group because of the real discussions on family culture and difficulty with boundaries. I liked the handouts that were shared by the clinician too. I’ve already signed up for the next one!”

How are peer support groups substantiated by evidence-based research?
A US National Alliance study on Mental Illness
Showed that participants who attended peer-driven support groups consistently benefitted from reduced anxiety, improved family problem-solving, increased positive coping, and improved symptoms of distress.
A BMJ Journal study among university students
Revealed that peer support is associated with greater happiness, better self-esteem, and reductions in loneliness
A report from Mental Health America
Suggests that recurring peer support groups, when scaled at a national level, can reduce re-hospitalization rates (in some cases by 56%), reduced inpatient days, and lower overall costs of healthcare services.
Who are our support groups for?
If you’re seeking a channel for continuous growth and you’re curious about using group connection as a mechanism for self-empowerment, this is for you!
Conversations are facilitated by licensed mental health professionals who create space for individuals to express themselves authentically, feel seen by peers, and be acknowledged by community members who resonate with shared experiences as minorities living in a majority culture.
Why are they beneficial for the Asian community?
Given the cultural emphasis on family and community, Asian support groups can provide a supportive environment for individuals to share experiences and foster community healing. They can help destigmatize mental health and normalize struggles that we may believe are lonely, isolating experiences.
Together, we can recognize the diverse backgrounds among the Asian diaspora, and use differences and similarities as a transformation tool.
